It is absolutely draining to be worrying about inflammatory flares. Even when things are going okay, you worry about what will happen when you get another flare.
When you’re dealing with the joint pain and fatigue, you (and sometimes your doctors) focus on short term, bandaid solutions. Sometimes those solutions work in the short term, but before long they come back to bite you.
So we stay home to rest during family birthdays and our child’s recital, and cancel that hike we’ve been planning with our friend.
All because of a flare.
And we find ourselves asking, “Aren’t I too young for this BS?!”
In my 20s, I went from being able to take 30 minute walks with my dog to barely being able to hobble from my bedroom to my kitchen in a matter of days.
Of course, I went to the doctor who sent me to physiotherapy. I did all the things, but my knee didn’t get any better.
My mental health started to suffer as I dealt with this new pain. I thought, “I’m only 24. Is this what the rest of my life is going to be like?”
Eventually, my knee spontaneously got better and I was diagnoses with psoriatic arthritis.
Things went well for a while until fall of 2018. And in December 2018, I realized that I had missed more days of work that month than days I had actually gone into the office.
And it wasn’t just my joints hurting anymore. My whole body, including muscles, hurt.

I decided that enough was enough and that I was going to do whatever I could to feel better.
It felt like there was so much to do but I soon realized that even small incremental shifts were helping me feel better – even in the midst of flares.
These changes drastically improved my quality of life. So, as a registered dietitian, I started helping others who struggled with similar inflammatory challenges.
Now I’m on a mission to help other women learn how to make the lifestyle and mindset shifts that will help them fall back in love with their lives.
